Problems of translating the Bhagavad Gita into Azerbaijani
Abstract:
This article focuses on the translation of the Bhagavad Gita, part of the ancient Indian epic poem "Mahabharata," into Azerbaijani. It begins by examining various translation methods aimed at ensuring an adequate and equivalent perception of the text in other languages. It is well known that textual categories (substantive, structural, structural, functional, and communicative) are components and presuppose the coherence and integrity of the text. The latter demands different approaches to comparative analysis of the text. Each of these approaches, whether functional-stylistic or communicative-pragmatic, presupposes the identification of correspondences at both the linguistic and communicative levels. Naturally, these requirements are aimed at the holistic perception of content and form. In this case, it seems necessary to understand the rendering of the form of the analyzed text, which is a classical Sanskrit verse with its own rhythm and structure. No less challenging for the translator is understanding and conveying the specialized vocabulary and terminology, which have not only religious but also philosophical significance. A comparative analysis of the original text and the Azerbaijani translation reveals both successes and shortcomings. Furthermore, it was discovered that the translation was not done from an English source, but from Russian; certain specific terminology is not commented on, making it difficult for non-Azerbaijani readers to understand the original text.
